What Apple added in macOS 26.4

With macOS Tahoe 26.4, Apple shipped what charge-limiter users had requested for years: a native limit. On Apple Silicon Macs running 26.4 or later, open System Settings → Battery and pick a limit of 80, 85, 90, 95 or 100%. When enabled, macOS holds charging at that level — a genuine OS-level cap, not a prediction.

Credit where due: for a casual user on the latest macOS who wants a simple 80% cap and nothing else, the built-in setting is now a perfectly reasonable default. The rest of this page is the fine print — and everything a cap alone still doesn't solve.

The built-in limit's fine print

It won't go below 80%. For machines that live on a charger, enthusiasts often run even lower everyday levels (60–70%) to reduce voltage stress further. The built-in slider stops at 80%.

Calibration charges to 100% are part of the design. To keep the charge-percentage estimate accurate, the system occasionally completes a full charge even with the limit on, and there is no opt-out. If your goal is “never sit at 100%”, the built-in limit doesn't promise that.

Nothing guards the limit. If the limit is disabled or bypassed — an SMC reset, a firmware quirk, a family member toggling settings — nothing detects it, restores it, or tells you. And on macOS 15 through 26.3 there is no built-in limit at all.

Optimized Battery Charging is still a heuristic

The older feature (macOS Big Sur and later) learns your charging routine and, when it predicts a long plugged-in stretch (e.g. overnight), holds around 80% and finishes charging shortly before your usual unplug time. When the prediction fires, it genuinely helps.

The catch is unchanged: it only activates when your routine is predictable. Always-plugged desks, irregular schedules, travel — the prediction rarely fires and the battery sits at 100% for weeks. You cannot choose a level, and macOS may finish the charge whenever its model decides. On any Mac that can't run 26.4, this heuristic is still all you get built in.

Why sitting at 100% matters

What an autopilot adds beyond a cap

Battery Autopilot writes standard keys on the SMC (System Management Controller) — the chip that decides whether the battery charges — so the cap works on macOS 15 and later, at any level from 50 to 100%. A continuity guard detects overrides, including surprise charges past your limit, and reverts them automatically; a failsafe always allows charging when the battery is low.

Then the actual autopilot part: it learns when you usually unplug and tops up to 100% just before you leave; it applies power-saving actions and measures the real wattage effect (ΔW) on your Mac, keeping only what provably works; and it reports the outcome daily as “+47 min extended” — so a cap you can't feel becomes a result you can see.
